A tense situation prevailed in Malda after five idols were vandalised at the Haribasor Temple in the Harischandrapur area, prompting the deployment of a large police force to maintain law and order. The incident came to light on Thursday morning, triggering concern among local residents.

According to initial information, miscreants allegedly entered the temple late at night and removed five idols, including those of Lord Krishna and Radha. The broken idols were later found scattered in a nearby mango orchard, a short distance away from the temple premises.

Following the discovery, police from Harischandrapur police station rushed to the spot under the leadership of IC Manojit Sarkar, while the Sub-Divisional Officer of Chanchal also visited the area. Police said an investigation has been initiated and steps have been taken to prevent any further disturbance.

Residents from both Hindu and Muslim communities jointly condemned the act and demanded strict punishment for those responsible, stressing communal harmony. The incident also drew political reactions, with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanding immediate action and alleging repeated attacks on religious places in the state.
